Don't rubber the wrong way.

Okay. I finally got the new BlackBerry up and running today. The other day, I wanted to try its camera and shot this bus shelter ad that I walk past almost every day on my way to work.

I know I'm not in the ad business. But I've got a problem with the LifeStyles "Protect Your Sex" campaign, as illustrated by this ad.

So this cowgirl chick is supposed to symbolize "protect your sex." So why a sexy cowgirl? Why not a cop? Is this some sort of play on words to do with the Cowgirl (NSFW)? Or is it just that the LifeStyles folks wanted a model with really big lips?

But worst of all -- if this is supposed to be sexy, why does it look as if she's ready to do a rectal exam? Is that what she needs the condom for?

I know this is no "Motrin Mom" deal, but geez, come on. Surely there's a better ad strategy than this.

Ciao,
Bob.

Gotta disagree with you on this one. Cowgirl is making a pistol with her fingers (I don't think you need two for a rectal exam, btw). This is a nice playful visual to go with the "protect your sex" tag. Cowgirl also has that "Wild West" thing going to imply "wild sex," not an unreasonable expectation, according to this Calgary Sun article from this past summer's stampede. Finally, "cowgirl" is of course the name of a sexual position. It works on a lot of levels for me. I wish I could be this clever.

I'm with Bob on this one.

Also, she doesn't even look like a real woman. Her features are, how can I put this delicately...exaggerated. Lips, eyes, and other features, too.

This ad is especially interesting at one of the Toronto subway stations though, as it sits next to what I believe is a Dove ad featuring women who look great sans Photoshop enhancements.
