How to self-promote, case study 1.

This morning, like many mornings, I got a Twitter notification that someone was following me, and as usual, I checked out their stream.

Tinku had none of the attributes of a Twit-spammer (a name that looks like Bob123, a huge ratio of followed to followers, a tiny number of updates), and when I checked out her Twitterstream, I saw that she had been at Podcamp Boston.

So I followed her. And I checked out her blog, then her Web site. Okay, this is cool. Like the logo, like the story of someone born in India and brought up in Newfoundland, then finding herself in Toronto and chasing her passion for art, like her blog content.

So then I got a direct message back thanking me for following her, and I responded back with a word about my Newfoundland roots.

And now here I am blogging about the exchange.

So if you're out there thinking about how to network, how to reach out to people online, how to get yourself noticed and talked about in the blogosphere / podosphere / on social networks -- you could do worse than to follow Tinku's example.

There's no big secret. It just takes work, and being nice. And I can guarantee you the next time I'm in Toronto, I will be stopping by the gallery to take a look.

Ciao,
Bob.
