Just watching CBC Television's "The National", and lookee -- Nanaimo is possibly the most "googleized" city on earth.
Makes me feel bad about stealing Bob Bossin's old joke -- "Why is Nanaimo like the moon? ZERO ATMOSPHERE!" ba-dum pssht.
Ciao,
Bob.

That crap about Nanaimo having no atmosphere may have had some relevance 30 years ago but not today. Our parks are fabulous, there's a rich social and cultural life, and our downtown waterfront is unsurpassed. Boomers from all across Canada are discovering Nanaimo's retirement potential. Real estate prices are still well below those in Victoria and Vancouver, the climate is mild, and Nanaimo is centrally located on Vancouver Island making it a great home base for retirees. It's small enough still be friendly to strangers and you quickly get to know people here. That's atmosphere!
I did say I felt bad... I haven't been to Nanaimo, and other than the bars and that weird boat race thing, the only thing I had to say about it was the Bossin joke. Of course, he's on Gabriola and there's likely a feud or something. Anyway, it was good-natured. If I cheesed you off, sorry. Just being flip.
No worries Bob. If you ever visit Nanaimo email me and I'll buy you lunch.
